The Pillow Radiator :: Pillow was designed for Bisque in 2007. This radical new design challenges preconceptions by reproducing the shape of a soft object in rigid steel. The result is a compelling and complex aesthetic form which appears to float on the wall. Finished in flawless mirror polished stainless steel, the surface is ‘alive’ – in continual flux - reflecting movement, colour and light in the surrounding environment :::: As Stephen Newby puts it: ‘Blown steel could be seen as a synthesis of a modern dialectic: the ‘organic’ and the ‘manufactured’. It breaks with current architectural and design trends, from cutting edge modern (the crinkle of steel breaks the monotony of minimalism’s straight lines) to the decorative classical interior…Blown stainless can be read as minimalist, futuristic, pop, surrealist, or all four.’ The prototype of Pillow is one of Bisque’s ‘Designs for the Future’, showcased at 100% Design. Stephen Newby started his company Fullblown Metals in 1996 to research innovative ways of forming stainless steel and produce objects never seen before in that material: “It has been my intention to take the cold, clinical and industrial connotations that stainless steel invokes and subvert these assumptions by turning it into something soft and tactile” (Newby, 1995). He has received numerous commissions from prestigious institutions such as the Arts Council, and is currently working on groundbreaking projects with companies in Italy, France and Germany - designing and manufacturing products as diverse as food serving objects, interior mirrors and landmark public sculptures.
